Some of us live in smaller homes and just don't have room for a regular sized Christmas tree. In the past I've decorated with table top Christmas trees.

But this year I wanted to do something different. So I purchased a pencil (I just call it skinny) Christmas tree at Michael's. It was $69.99, which was half-price.

So were the shatter proof ornaments I purchased. Two containers with 50 ornaments each for $14.99. So my Christmas tree and ornaments cost a total of $100.

Reasons To Buy A Skinny Tree:

Skinny Christmas trees are typically cheaper than the wider versions.

Second, they fit into tight spaces. They really look great in corners, or you could put one or two in an entryway to greet guests.

You could also, if you have the room, gather two or three skinny trees together and just leave them bare except for the lights. That would be an elegant look.

A skinny tree would also look great in a basket for a boho look.

I wanted to put mine in one of my galvanized containers hanging on the fence, but the base was too big.

Decorating The Tree:

When I started decorating this tree, I was a tad hesitant. I started tying ornaments on with jute, which I do every year. This is to keep the pets from pulling them off.

I put quite a few at the top, then sat down and looked at it awhile. I slept on it, then I decided that wasn't working and started thinning out the ornaments.

That was a much better and more understated look. (Sometimes it really helps to sleep on a decision.)

Choose A Few Colors For A Unified Theme:

Choose a color theme for your tree if you live in a small space and don't want to overwhelm the room. I chose red, white, gold and silver.

At first I thought about not putting anything on the tree. It was pretty just with the lights. But I kind of have a thing about decorating with red at Christmas.

Adding The Ornaments:

I mixed in some older ornaments I already had that were also round but a little smaller to give the tree more balance.

While at Michael's I looked at three sizes of shatter proof ornaments. They were small, medium and large. I chose medium.

I probably would also have been satisfied with the small size, but I knew I had some of those at home to mix in. And I chose to use just the basic round ornaments and not add different kinds.

I layered the ornaments from the top of the tree and moved down to the bottom. I also like to have the lights plugged in when I decorate the tree. Seems to give me a better idea of what should go where.

I don't have to worry about coming around the corner of my kitchen to let Charlie out in the middle of the night, which is frequent, and running straight into a tree. This one is tucked nicely into the corner. Completely out of the way.

I like the double image of lights mirrored in the French doors. I also like that you can view the tree from the outside.
